Chats with the Candidates 2011 Re-BroadcastThis is the second and last of our mini-series re-broadcast covering the 2011 Mayor’s race in Phoenix.  We’re having some casual conversations with the candidates and asking them to ‘remove their campaign hats’ to just talk to us as real people.  We took some of our own listener’s questions along with our own and posed them to the candidates.

Wes GullettTo round things out, we’re talking with Wes Gullett.  Yes, he’s the guy with 1000s of signs around Phoenix.  Unlike several of the other candidates, Wes has not served on the Phoenix City Council.  He is a businessman and has had his fair share of working with politicians, so he’s not afraid of the big office Downtown.  He’s a personal friend of Councilman Tom Simplot and says that, while some of his views and policies are conservative, that he truly wishes to engage with the LGBT community.  He talks to Joe Dugandzic, co-host of several QTalk Arizona shows, about how he will present fresh ideas for Phoenix, how to fuel real job growth and what his vision for the City is for the next 10 years.

Greg Stanton and his wife NicoleThis time, we’re talking with Greg Stanton.  Greg served on the Phoenix City Council for the better part of the last decade, has been an outspoken advocate of our community and is said to have new and fresh ideas for Phoenix.  He talks to Joe Dugandzic, co-host of several QTalk Arizona shows, about his vision for the future of the City, how he wants to engage with our community and explains the relationship between the City Council and The Mayor, and talks about how much power the Mayor actually has (the answer may surprise you.)  And, with all the recent news about the nation’s debt ceiling, we also talk about how the City spends money and its own debt and bond programs.

A Conversation with TomIn continuing our coverage of the 2011 Phoenix Mayoral Election, we’re having a casual conversation with openly gay Phoenix City Councilman Tom Simplot.  He represents District 4 in the City and we’re chatting about the important issues of the day and of the future.

Tom Simplot

Phoenix City Councilman Tom Simplot

Tom self-titles himself “The Gay Councilman” and recognizes his very important role in our local community.  It’s great to have ‘one of our own” in City Hall to represent us.  Tom shares with us some of his successes for the LGBT community, including fighting for the Domestic Partner Registry.  He details just how difficult it can be to get something passed through the Council and how he has also lobbied other City Councils in the Valley for important ordinances that needed to go beyond the city limits.
